Every year, since their arrival in Madrid in 2018, electric scooters are the cause of a large number of accidents. So far in 2022, 40 accidents have taken place and in 2021 577 were recorded. In addition, they are the vehicle that registers the highest number of fines compared to bicycles and motorcycles. At the moment, its regulation does not seem to solve the problems that arise from its use and many are calling for stricter regulations.
A large number of scooters are a cluster of obstacles in the center of Madrid. A few months ago, a 33-year-old man who was riding a scooter fell and was hit by a car in the Chamberí neighborhood. Also, according to an accident report from the Madrid City Council, a child under 5 years old was run over this year .
Users who use this vehicle endanger both pedestrians and themselves: many use the telephone, drive in a prohibited direction or overtake without respecting the safety distance, causing in some cases a fall to the ground that can be fatal. very serious.
So far in 2022, according to the City Council report, around 40 accidents have been recorded, most of them due to collisions, although also due to being hit by a car or falling to the ground . The previous year, a total of 577 accidents related to this vehicle were recorded, compared to the 179 registered in 2020 and 75 in 2019.
The amount of the fines is 60 euros, but can rise to 1,000 euros.
On the other hand, fines have also increased. The penalties received by scooter users accounted for 82% of those imposed on bicycles, motorcycles and scooters during 2021 , that is, a total of 122,868 penalties , most of them registered in the neighborhoods of Palacio, Embajadores, Justicia, Recoletos and University.
The amount of the fines is 60 euros , both for traffic and parking, but can rise to 1,000 euros if traffic is under the influence of alcohol or drugs or if there are "circumstances of special danger or risk as determined by the agent." of the authority that formulates the complaint".
